November 10, 1992 - Tuesday - Melissa, Present

I woke up late this morning at eight thirty, just as my Physics lab was starting. I only woke up because Chris shut the door pretty loud as he was leaving, he then told me that he thought I was sleeping in. I hurried and got ready and made it in time to at least get a half decent report finished. It's a hell of a lot better than just taking a zero. I got tired of that shit though, and left early enough to make it to German with time to spare. I walked into class and Karen and Fran‡oise were the only two people there. I walked out to the bathroom to comb my hair, and when I got back, my baby was there! I asked her how she was, and she said that she is getting better. She then admitted that last night, she and a girlfriend went out and got drunk on Beck's beer. She only drinks imported. I had figured that she would and told her so. Fran‡oise has been sick lately, she caught mono from her boyfriend. When nobody inquired if she was better she said, 'Hey guys, you know, I'm feeling much better today.' I thought it was funny and jokingly asked her if she was glad that we asked.

It was really cold in the room today. It was actually warmer outside even though a cold front has recently passed through and it is windy. Fran‡oise moved from the back where the vent is to try and warm up. I noticed that Melissa was shivering and thought how much I'd like to pull her close and comfort her. I told her to come outside with me so that we could warm up a bit. Cindy was just walking up and I told her that she was going to freeze in class. She is always cold and always complains about me wearing shorts when it is cool. Melissa and I then walked downstairs to the snack shop where she bought coffee and I bought a Coke. I was going to buy a doughnut but they didn't look too appealing. I hadn't had any breakfast this morning since I woke late. I at least needed some caffeine. We walked back upstairs and it felt good walking in with Melissa, sort of showing off.

Last night we were supposed to learn the past tense forms of the verbs, which I spent a long time doing. I then made a sentence before class telling Melissa that she drank a lot of Beck's beer yesterday. Gestern hast du viel Beck's Bier getrunken. She thought it was funny. I realized the mistake of buying a cold drink to have while in a cold classroom. But I don't really like coffee so there wasn't much I could do. I told her to let me see her hand, and held it with my cold one for a few seconds. I kept making cute yet funny jokes to help cheer her up.

Since I came straight from lab, I rode my bicycle to class today. I didn't even consider taking it home with me as compared to walking with Melissa. I figured that I'd pick it up on my way to Calculus later. Towards the end of class Elaine mentioned something about everybody being sick. I think it was because only sixteen people showed up today. I said that I'm not sick. Melissa then said that she is sick, with a broken heart. I told her that pretty soon she'll follow the typical path when someone breaks up after a long time, and won't want to even see a member of the opposite sex. She quickly corrected me and said that now she's going to date every member of the opposite sex. I perked up and said 'Hi!' and she loved it! I then introduced myself as Dan, and told her that I hope I'm around as soon as she starts. She seemed quite cheered up while I said that. It was great. At least now she really knows that I'm interested and it will give her something to think about.

As we were leaving I told her that later on I'll stop buy and give her a present. She smiled and asked me what. I told her that I'd call her later if it is still in the refrigerator. As we were walking apart she rubbed her stomach, and still smiling, asked me if it is food. Actually I want to give her our last Carlsberg Beer. I had mentioned earlier that it was the kind I drank over the weekend and she said that she really likes that kind. We were talking about how it tastes better as it warms up and everything. I'm going to wrap it up and go over and give it to her later today.

Well, everything is going beautifully with Melissa. She is truly the girl that I like the most right now, and I've admitted that to the guys...

I think maybe I'm catching that star.....

I called Melissa at three thirty but got her answering machine. Christa then came over at about four to see Ed. We talked for a few minutes until he showed up from class. She came in as a freshman last year planning on either majoring in engineering or medicine (sounds like me!) but has since changed her major many times. I was just waiting around until Melissa called me. When she did, Chris was home and answered it. He was being all cutesy to her. I talked to her for a few minutes and then asked her if she was free for a little bit so I could give her the present. I had wrapped up the bottle of Carlsberg Beer in bubble wrap and then a paper bag. She wanted to know whether I was coming over, or should she come over to my room. It is really messy in my room and I didn't want Ed or Chris seeing me give her the last beer so I decided to walk over. I told her that I really want her to come over sometime though. When Chris heard me tell her that I'd go over there, he yelled at me to bring her over. She thought it was funny when I told her later.

She sounded glad again when I said that I was giving her a present, and she hadn't heard me say what I was giving her, just that it was in my refrigerator. So I walked over to her dorm, and she was waiting for me outside on the picnic table again. I sat down with her and handed her the bag. She still couldn't tell that it was a bottle until she could see it through the bubble wrap. When she saw it she thought it was really funny and was glad that I was giving it to her. I told her that I think she needs it more than I do. We joked about how good a friend I am, giving her a beer to ease her problems. I joked that I felt morally correct drinking Carlsberg beer because it's imported by Anheuser Busch, my favorite company.

We sat out there under the trees and talked for quite a while before she finally had to start heading over to Library East to work on her thesis before it got dark. We were talking about how good it is to just sit down and mope every once in a while. Every time I look at her when we aren't talking, she'll smile a really pretty smile. We had a really good and lengthy talk. I can actually tell stories to her. I'm usually a better listener than I am a long talker. I think I'm falling for her.

I was in Jon's room a little while ago when I realized how close it is getting until the end of the semester, until Melissa is gone. I have to keep things going, but I still must let her recover enough so that she won't later regret her actions as acts of desperation. I just wish I had more time with her because things are going so well for me now...

Christa came over just a little while ago and brought a close friend of hers, Rachel. They were going dancing with Ed but stuck around and we all talked and watched TV for a while. Rachel was average looking, and I only heard her say a few short words to begin with. When she started talking, I heard the accent!!! I asked her where she is from and she said Scotland. I was intrigued. I'm infatuated over anything British, or European for that matter, including the girls. Then she mentioned her boyfriend. I walked in to Jon's room and said, 'Fuck!' and he laughed. He agreed and gave me five. Christa keeps bringing the cute girls along, but they always have boyfriends. But what are boyfriends? Abby's didn't matter... And Melissa's of four and a half years might not have posed a problem either... We'll see. I'll try!
