November 24, 1992 - Tuesday - Melissa Moosehead!, Bday

Happy birthday to me!!! I am finally a legal adult, but is that really good?!? Oh well! My most favorite person in the world pulled a little surprise on me and it worked very well in her favor. I was a bit early to German class so I walked out to the plaza in front of Little Hall just to see if anybody was out there studying for our little quiz. As I did, I saw Melissa walking out of the convenience store with her daily bagel and drink. I walked around so that we reached the stairway at the same time. When she saw me she told me happy birthday and asked me how my day was going so far. I said it was fine and, a little suspiciously asked her about hers. She did seem a little happier than usual. We then walked up to the room and she jumped in front of me and opened the door. I backed up to let her go in first, because that's the gentleman I am, and I didn't want to seem too egotistical by accepting any special treatment so graciously. We stood out there and laughingly argued each telling the other to go ahead and go in. Finally she told me that I have to go in first. I looked and only saw three people and knew there wasn't any real danger so I walked in. There on my desk was a great big present!!!!! I was very surprised and overwhelmed with joy, as I later told her.

Of course the present was a six pack of imported Moosehead Beer, only the best. You could tell that it was a six pack of something and she joked that it was Cappio for a second. We were both being really funny and were joking around a lot until we got home. I had a lot of fun with her today. Halfway through class Melissa told Elaine that today is my birthday, so she was all surprised and told the entire class. She asked me how old I am, and when I told her eighteen, she said something about how young I am. Of course, almost everything we were saying was in German. She also had some of the other people in the class ask me how old I am and had the entire class wish me Happy Birthday in German. It was funny. On the way home I brought up our joke about what good friends we really are since we give each other beer. She told me that she is giving these to me for my enjoyment, but I gave her the one because she was depressed and we laughed. We also joked about her contributing to the delinquency of a minor and all. As we were walking, I was holding my present up high and flaunting it. She joked that I shouldn't show off too much because there still is a law about a minor possessing alcohol. I told her that it's my birthday and if I want to bask in the joy of it all, then I can and we laughed. We were being very silly. As we parted I said 'Many thanks, well actually six thanks!' and she really liked that.

I was thinking about how perfectly her little surprise worked because I could have walked in while she was gone and it just wouldn't have been the same. She still doesn't know what she's doing for Thanksgiving. I told her that if it's bad weather in tampa, and I come back early, I'll give her a call and check on her well being.

Fran‡oise even wrote me a cute little note in class that was shaped like a birthday card. On the front it said `Herzlichen Glckwunch zum Geburstag!!' and had a bunch of smiley faces, balloons, and a cake with an 18 on top. On the back it said `German is fun!' Inside she wrote:

I hope you have a
great day and get a
plethora of presents
Happy Birthday {heart}
Fran!
{smile}
