January 6, 1993 - Wednesday
I had a pretty cool first day of real classes today. I had to wake up early for my second period British literature class. I kept thinking that the guy is nuts, but then realized that if Melissa could get an A, then so can I. There are no exams in that class, just four or five writing assignments. Class participation, however, counts twenty percent. There were some pretty good looking girls in there. They all seemed older. Nobody really talked to each other yet though. A pretty cute one came in and sat next to me. There was also a really cute one across a few seats that kept half flirting with me. I'll have to get to know some of them. I then went home and went to sleep during my three hour break. I'm much more aware in the early afternoon, which makes my new schedule work out very well. I can handle one morning class pretty well, but I don't like more than that.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, my only class is third period chemistry lecture, and then the rest of the day is free. That's cool! I also have a strong desire to be able to get to my German class early. I like to hang out and talk before class and get a good seat for me and the girls. It sucked royally when I had to rush to German after physics discussion last semester. This time I have a three hour break before German. That also gives me a good amount of time for cramming before a test.
I woke up today and made lunch and then headed out to find the Psychology building where my German class is held. According to the map, my schedule worked out so that my sixth, seventh, and eighth period classes are all pretty close to each other. That's another thing I tried to consider when making my schedule. Everything worked out pretty well. When I found the room, there was a guy and a pretty cute girl sitting across from him talking. I sat down and we all said a few things. She obviously found me more interesting to look at and talk to because she kept talking to me more and more almost trying to ignore the other guy completely. She's joining a sorority, too. When the other class was released, the three of us walked in and she started lagging behind to see where I would sit. I sat in he second chair, two rows over from the guy. She went and sat right in the middle. Pretty soon she was only talking to me.
Another cute girl walked in, talked to the guy from across the room, and then sat on the other side of me. I didn't say much to her, and she didn't ever talk to anyone much more so she looks like a definite person to befriend, but I can let her wait because I have to hurry and snag the other ones that would pair off with whichever guy talks to them first. Derek then walked in, with Meg!!! I sure as hell wasn't expecting to see her! I said hi to the two of them, and they headed to the back. Fran‡oise then walked in. I was a bit glad to see a familiar face. She sat in front of me and turned around and we started talking and joking around. The sorority girl seemed a bit quiet for a few minutes after I talked to Fran‡oise so much. Jennifer came in late. By then, there were no more seats near me. Since she knows Derek, she walked to the back and didn't notice me. Towards the end of class, the teacher, who is a very ugly hippy woman, told us to pair up and introduce ourselves. I laughed and tapped Fran‡oise on the shoulder, and asked her name. We fooled around for a few minutes. We then started talking to the sorority girl and the blonde in front of her. We all talked away for the last five minutes of class.
I said goodbye to them and waited to talk to Jennifer. She was talking to Derek for a minute, and Meg was just standing there. I walked up to her and asked her if she is just visiting Derek. She laughed and asked me if I thought she would actually go to school here! It was funny. She said that she is going home on Friday. Jennifer finished talking to Derek and turned towards me and I said hello. We walked towards the door and I turned to ask Derek about his GPA. Ross told me yesterday that he had done bad. He said that he ended up with something like a 2.7 and would have to make a 4.0 in eighteen credit hours to keep his Florida Academic money. He's trying to get a grade changed and I wished him luck. I kept Jennifer in the corner of my eye in case she tried to leave, but she actually waited right behind me for me to come. I was glad.
As we walked into the stairway, I asked her in German what her name is. She said Jennifer and asked me mine. We walked outside and were talking about how that building is in the middle of nowhere. I asked her how she liked our little teacher. She kept getting nervous a lot of times and would seem to go blank on what she was going to say. It got annoying. Jennifer laughed and brought that up and said that she was about ready to get up, and we both said, 'slap the shit of her,' at the same time. It was funny. I told her that I figured she'd say something like that just from talking to her yesterday. She's got an attitude very much like mine. It's funny! I asked her where she was going,a nd she said she doesn't have another class until ninth period. I told her that I have to go to McCarty Hall for my next class. I grabbed my bike.
I then played dumb about knowing where the hall is. I had a general idea, actually I've been through it many times. It was up to the right. She knew the way from around the Reitz Union and seemed intent on getting me to go that way with her. Of course I did. I knew exactly when to shutup and just go along. It was way out of my way, but I was on my bike and getting to know her was well worth it. We were talking about Derek for a few minutes. I just wanted to know how she knew him. She said that he was also in an English course with her last semester. She said that they used to study together before German tests. Derek still acts like a fool just to try and impress the girls, like he did in high school. She mentioned that. I said how surprised I was when I saw Meg walk into class with him. She said that she used to hear about Meg all of the time.
I asked her where she's from, and she said Boca Raton. I thought it was funny that the girls I meet are quite often from the same weird places as the guys Kim meets; Boca Raton and St. Louis at the top of my head. She asked me where I was from, and then laughed and said Tampa. I acted amazed and asked how she knew, since I already said that I went to high school with Derek. She stays over in South Hall. She knows somebody in Beaty and we talked about that for a few minutes. She's not as close and convenient as Melissa or Tama, but oh well. I think she has a sister here because she was talking about her, saying that they usually drive home together when they go. She said that one time her sister wanted to stop by her boyfriends house and spend the night on the way home. Jennifer really didn't want to, so she flew home instead. It was funny. We were talking about Gainesville being such a small town with nothing to do. She said that she really likes the campus, and has met a lot of nice people, but the city sucks. I agreed, saying I never knew how much I'd miss Tampa until I was up here for a while.
Well, Jennifer and I hit it off pretty well, and I'm glad. I really like her. It's not often you meet someone by such seemingly impossible circumstances that is very much lie you,and so fun and easy to talk to. It's just weird that I waited as long as I did fucking around to go to the end of the German drop/add line, only to meet a girl like Jennifer, who turns out to be a really good friend of Derek's, and then steal her right out from under his nose like I hopefully did. If not, she'll be a really good way for Derek and I to be friends again for a while, too. With Meg, he shouldn't have anything to be jealous about. We ran into a girlfriend of hers right as it was time for me to go. As she was walking away from us, she asked Jennifer what her phone number is again, and she said 8299, I think. It was a funny way to get her number. I think I'll wait until she gives it to me directly. We said goodbye, for she said that she wouldn't want me to be late to class because McCarty is really confusing and I'll probably get lost. We laughed and said that we'd see each other on Friday.
I also had asked her why she was late to class, if she had one right before it, or just got lost. She said that her only class before that one was early in the morning, just like mine, and she went to sleep and overslept! I just realized, if we both have spare time like that around lunchtime, maybe we can get together. I hope so, I hope so, I hope so.
I ended up making a seriously lucky guess, because I picked the right stairway and walked straight into my class. This new Calculus III teacher is awesome! He taught some material about vectors that I already knew worked, but I didn't know why they worked or what they really did. He taught the stuff in a way that was very clear, and almost enlightening. I was amazed at how easily I understood the stuff. He's also a very loud and clear speaker. I think I'm going to like that math class, although it's still almost entirely guys. But this time the room is large and we can spread out. I think this semester is going to work out nicely.
I then rode down to my chemistry lab, only to find out that they don't start until next week. Hurray!!!
