October 6, 1992 - Tuesday - Bill Clinton, Tri Delt

I don't know what's gotten into me but I seem to have an abundance of things to write about in my journal lately. It usually means that things are going pretty well for me, which they definitely are.

I found out during the past couple of days that Bill Clinton and Al Gore were coming to speak here at UF. It was scheduled for this morning at nine and was to be held in the Reitz Union lawn. I pictured a decent crowd and a typical politician speech on a raised platform in the center. The University Police Department expected about ten thousand people to attend. I really wanted to go yesterday and was talking to Melissa about it, but I had Physics lab this morning from 8:30 to 10:15 which really sucked. I had thought about going to the department head yesterday morning and asking for a make up date so that I could attend, but I didn't really want to have to do my lab later.

On the way to lab I saw them setting up a huge stage in the lawn behind the Union, which is much larger. There were already tons of people packed around the stage and many more were flooding in from every which way. Kim and Debbie were at class waiting outside the door again, so I sat down and talked with them. They thought I was crazy for wearing only a T-shirt, shorts, and flip flops but it was actually warmer than yesterday. We really wanted to go see Bill Clinton but our instructor, Dave, said that it was impossible. The little faggot. He is the biggest pussy I have ever seen teaching before in my life. He really pisses me off. He told us that he was going to go ask the head if we could, so he walks out, and then comes back in and says that the guy said no. I would bet money that he just went outside and never asked. Kim and I decided to work together again.

When we were done at about 10:20 we both hurried out to try to catch a glimpse of Bill and see what else was going on. There was an ocean of people! The UPD later said that between twenty and twenty-five thousand people came to see Bill CLinton speak!!! It was amazing. I was tall enough that I could see Clinton and Gore standing way down on the stage with their wives, Hillary and Tipper. They were both in blue dresses which made it easier to pick them out. Kim couldn't see them except for the one time when she jumped. I was about ready to give her a piggy-back ride and I think she was going to let me. We ended up walking around the back through the crowds and stopped as we were getting close to the Union building. The whole sight was very impressive. The media coverage was very extensive, they had an entire section devoted solely to news cameras. There were also Secret Servicemen everywhere. If you looked up you could see them with binoculars up on the corners of the buildings. I'm sure they had every square inch of that place being covered at all times.

All of the sudden Ed pops up out of nowhere. I introduced them and we all talked for a few minutes. She then had to go to her Physics lecture class so I'm glad Ed showed up. Since we are both tall enough to see past the people, we decided to go around and work our way in straight from the back. It worked and we ended up with a really good view of all four of them on stage. Gore had been talking all of this time, and right as we got there, he introduced Clinton. He gave his typical speech but it was impressive. I am so glad that it ran late and that I made it in time to see and hear him. The whole scene reminded me of what high school students dream college will be like. Twenty-five thousand students all together attending a presidential-nominee rally. I remember getting caught up in those thoughts and thinking that, 'This IS college.' It was unbelievable. That is truly why I wanted to go. Even though I do not support Clinton in any way, I knew that this may be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

There were also millions of babes. He he. Ed was about ready to wander over to his fifth period class but I convinced him to stay a bit longer. As soon as the crowd began dispersing, we headed straight into the crowd. My intentions were to see and run into as many cute girls as possible, find people we know, and get as close to Clinton as possible. There is this cute girl in my Physics class who I see all of the time, but since I'm usually with Farnaz, I've never talked to her or anything. I've also noticed that she pretty much sits by herself in that class. She's one of the few cute girls in there, there are not many for a class so big. Ed also always talks about a girl in one of his classes who is a Tri Delt that he always talks to. As we were walking forward, drooling over the girls, I see the girl from my Physics class, and she looks up and goes, 'Hi Ed!' I was surprised that she turned out to be his little Sorority friend. I immediately made my presence known so that I will be able to talk to her tomorrow in Physics. What a coincidence.

She mentioned being hungry and wanting to go to the Reitz Union for something to eat. Ed, who is a big time follower, said that he was thinking the same thing. In normal circumstances I would have let them go and would have gone my own way, possibly to the last half of German, but I had too much to gain from sticking around. I told her that the restaurant in the Reitz is probably packed because of all the people had the same idea, so we decided to go to the one over in the Fitness Center. She was in a very political mood and is a strong Bush advocate. Go her! She was part of a large group of Bush supporters at the rally who all had their big Bush campaign signs with them. She was going off on all of the ways Clinton would fuck up the United States. I completely agree.

I was all for change back when Lawton Chiles ran for Governor of Florida and it didn't matter to me then that he was a Democrat. i had an open mind and was willing to accept them hoping for the better. Instead he ended up giving a bunch of false promises, and ended up majorly screwing the state of Florida. He has almost destroyed our state's education system after promising to make it a top priority. After seeing what the Democrat's mean by change, there is no way in hell I could ever see voting for Bill Clinton. If he does become president, I think a lot of voters are going to shit in their pants after they see what they've put into office.

I had mentioned to Ed earlier that the most awesome combination would be George Bush for President, and Ross Perot for Vice President. That combination would kick ass. The Tri Delt brought that same point up later and Ed and I laughed. We sat in the restaurant and talked for a little while about the entire political thing and I put in some very good points. It got to where she would talk solely to me for long periods of time. Good. It sure does seem to me that every girl friend of Ed's that he lets me meet, I try my hardest to steal. It's actually true.

Anyway, there were these little hand held campaign signs for Clinton that were passed out during the rally that said something like, 'This is Clinton country.' A Republican got a hold of one and changed it saying, 'Who misspelled county with an r?' or something like that. She thought it was really funny and wanted one of those signs. She mentioned that as we were walking over and I told her that we should have just grabbed one out of somebody's hand in the crowd. I had my hand on one in the crowd but didn't do it. I then suggested afterwards that we walk back over and will most likely find one on the ground with the rest of the trash. I was intent on being the one to find it for her. She and Ed only found folded up messy ones. I walked up through a fence to the stage and looked under the cloth where I found two nearly perfect ones and she was very grateful. That turned out very well. They then had to head to class so I said goodbye and told her that I'd see her in Physics, and that I'd see Ed later at home.

Just before that, on the walk back to the field, we walked by a group and there was Kendra, the better one, with some friends. One was Heidi from my German class. She knew the girl we were walking with. She turned to Ed and said, 'How are you?' and then said the same to our Tri Delt, and then laughed as she realized that she knew me, too, and said the same to me. It was funny. Our Tri Delt knows her from one of her classes and asked me how I knew her. I told her that we went out once and she agreed that was a good reason to know her. It's starting to get funny, the people this girl knows, that I also know. I'm also pissed off that Ed never introduced us. Oh well, that just gives me more conversation for when I see her in class. Darn.

On the way home, I ran into Melissa walking to class. She too had gone to the rally but had then gone to German half way through class. I don't know where she gets her clothes but she looked very sexy again today. She was wearing a black button up shirt, black shorts, and black panty hose. It looked really good on her. I later saw Fran‡oise outside of Matherly Hall but I didn't say hi to her because she was with some Greek friends.

I figure I'll call Tama later on tonight and ask her if she went to the rackety. If not, I have some stories to tell.

I was also on the phone with my dad on Sunday night and I referred to my dorm as home and he asked me if that's what I call it now. Yep.
